Our class had a great opportunity to visit the Parma Fire Department. We learned about the common causes of house fires (carelessness) and ways to make our living spaces safer. The most important thing is to make sure we have working smoke detectors. We should test them every 6 months and change the batteries. We should also keep a fire extinguisher in our kitchen where most house fires occur. Fire extinguishers are usually not good after 10 years. Another important thing to do is check and make sure your electrical products have the letters "UL". This stands for "Underwriter Laboratories" and is an indication that your product has been tested for safety. We saw what a home can look like after a fire has been burning for 4 minutes and learned how quickly the temperature exceeds 1000 degees Fahrenheit. Everyone also had a chance to practice using a fire extinguisher to put out a fire.
